What is Eidul Adha ?
It simply means "Festival of the Sacrifice"). Some just say "Major Festival", the "Greater Eid" / "Greater Bairam" and also Feast of the Sacrifice. This festival honors the day when Abraham (Ibrahim) willing to sacrifice his promised son, Ishmael (Ismail), as an act of submission to God's command, before God (Allah) through His angel Gabriel (Jibra'il) and informs him that his sincere intention of sacrifice is well accepted. Eidul Adha is a festival celebrated by Muslims all over the world every year where Muslims normally choose camels and sheeps for such sacrifices whereas in Malaysia goats and cows are preferred. The end result of the sacrifice is to give away for free the main portion of the meat to poor people. It is a unique of celebration where the rich people able to understand the poor people through such sacrifice. Eidul Adha is the latter of the two Eid holidays, the former being Eid al-Fitr which is celebrated in Syawal, the Islamic month calendar. Precisely, Eidul Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah in the Islamic calendar and the celebration lasts for four days. It is mentioned in the 196th ayah (verse) of Al-Baqara, the second sura of the Quran. Whereas the word "Eid" specifically mentioned once in Sura Al-Ma'ida, the fifth sura in the Quran, with bring meaning of "solemn festival".

Eidul Adha is normally declared as a public holiday where all Muslims celebrate it with family, friends and colleagues because it involves the activities of animal sacrifice, prayers and family gatherings. This special day begins with morning prayers, then the chosen animals are slaughtered followed by visits to family and friends.
